The Catalyst cover story

Connectivity is the theme of the latest issue of Catalyst, the quarterly membership magazine that CPL produces for CIM (The Chartered Institute of Marketing.)

For the front cover of the magazine our design team explored ways to illustrate the concept of connectivity and create a unique image that would reflect it in a bold and insightful way.

Art director Debra Nelson commissioned artist Peter Crawley, who specialises in hand-stitched illustrations, to create the cover artwork. Peter hand-pierced paper with a pin then stitched the paper with a needle and cotton thread, drawing lines of connection that work together to form an ampersand – a graphic representation of the word ‘and’.

The final, physical piece of art was photographed in-house by our own photographer – Ciprian Cucuruz, ready to be printed as the magazine’s striking front cover. The ampersand highlights how individual threads of marketing combine to create the connectivity that is so intrinsic to the world of marketing today.

Martin Bewick, Catalyst’s content lead said: “It is the job of a marketer to make connections – between brand and consumer, product and user, message and audience. In today’s digital age connectivity is perhaps more important than ever. That little word ‘and’ is vital.”
