The February 2016 issue of the magazine for the Royal Statistical Society features a brand-new design, conceived and created by CPL.
CPL was appointed to carry out the redesign of Significance magazine, which is also the official title for the American Statistical Association, following a competitive pitch.
Significance is published bi-monthly, and is available in print and online. It explains how and why statistics are important in many areas of life, science and commerce, and has a print circulation of 26,000. CPL senior designer Kevin Reed worked closely with Significance editor Brian Tarran to develop the redesign, which includes a new masthead, colour palette and fonts. As part of the process, sections within the magazine were renamed and clearly differentiated.
“The content and information in Significance is designed to entertain and engage statisticians and other data professionals, but the magazine also acts as an outreach tool, to showcase the vital role of statistics to as wide an audience as possible,” explains Kevin. “We needed to present this content in a fresh and attention-grabbing way, while ensuring that readers can easily navigate their way around the magazine.
“Part of the brief was to help the RSS more strongly reflect the fact that Significance is a magazine, rather than an academic journal, and that its content is accessible to a broad audience. We are confident the new design achieves this objective and we hope readers – new and old – will enjoy the new look.”
Brian added: “It’s been a pleasure to work closely with Kevin and the CPL team on this project. Significance is an important publication for the RSS, the ASA and its members and CPL have done a great job in interpreting our brief and objectives.
“We are delighted with the distinctive design identity that CPL have delivered – and we look forward to seeing the magazine go from strength to strength in the rest of 2016 and beyond.”
