CPL has marked the 125th anniversary of a leading engineering institution with a special issue of its sector-leading magazine, CIBSE Journal.
Using a detailed timeline, the June 2022 issue of the monthly magazine for the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) looks back on how it has evolved from a “small group of dedicated Victorian engineers seeking to increase their knowledge about the science of heating and ventilation” to a 21,000-member global organisation covering every facet of building services.
Perhaps more importantly, the issue also looks forward. As CPL’s Alex Smith says in his editor’s letter, now is a time to reflect on how the building services engineering industry can best meet the future challenges of society.
“We know we can no longer rely on fossil fuels to power and heat our buildings,” writes Alex. “We must put our energy into revising our skill sets to prepare for the decarbonisation of buildings. We must also attract a new generation of engineers who have the talent and enthusiasm to achieve our goals.”
Alex also points out how some things that happened in 1897, the year CIBSE was formed, have a strong resonance today. “It was the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and this month Queen Elizabeth II celebrated 70 years on the throne.
“The current monarch has given her name to the new Elizabeth Line, which happens to come 125 years after the completion of another monumental London transport link – the Blackwall Tunnel, which, at the time, was the longest underwater tunnel in the world.”
CPL has been responsible for the editorial, design and production of CIBSE Journal for more than a decade, working closely with teams at CIBSE and Redactive, the agency responsible for advertising sales.
CIBSE is celebrating the anniversary by laying down five challenges to encourage action, communication and collaboration across the industry – see more at cibse.org/125 and via #cibse125challenges.
